In Memory

Nancy Espenshade

Chuck Psotka sent word that Nancy Espenshade passed away this past March 4.  I remember her warm smile and great laugh.  We both went to the University of Iowa though our paths really didn't cross after high school. She graduated in Nursing and I am sure she went on to make a difference in many people's lives as a health care provider.

You are right Chuck.  She did make a difference in many people's lives.

Nancy Espenshade was my good friend since kindergarten.  There were times in our lives that we lost touch but always picked up where we left off.  Nancy helped me when my father died, when my mother died, and numerous other life events.

She had a wonderful career in nursing during which she spent many years at Evanston Hospital as well as various physicians'  offices.  Nancy would enter a certain field of nursing such as psyc or operating room or dermatology or diabetes.  She would learn everything she could about that specialty and then move on to another specialty.

She married the Revernd Dave Kyllo, a Lutheran minister.  Her knowledge about illness, excellent listening skills and compassionate intelligence helped her in her role as a minister's wife.  She also enjoyed a great sense of humor.

Among other activites, Nancy was Captain of the Aquettes (water ballet) Team.  Although she was in West hall, our love of figure skating and swimming brought us together.

Nancy enjoyed a little wild side and was thrilled with fast moving cars.  She and her husband collected and raced them.

In the past several years Nancy had health problems. She died on March 5, 2020 of a sudden heart attack in the loving arms of her husband.

Susan, thanks for shedding some light on Nancy. I knew her as a fellow student in West Hall (never really accepted the name change to Boltwood) but didn't know her well.

Somehow, as we get on in years and peruse the "In Memory" page, it's nice to hear the short stories we have of our dearly departed classmates. May we all be remembered for the good we've done in this life.

I do, however, remember her as you described. Friendly, socially active, warm smile.

Would have liked to have known her better back then...

We'll stated, Randy. I didn't know Nancy but I appreciate very much learning about her life, one very well lived. It's hard to explain why and how our early school relationships have such significance and our desires to remain connected.
I'm looking forward to the reunion

So true. I am saddened to discover that there are so many classmates who've lived their lives in relatively close proximity but with whom I did not cross paths with since the days at ETHS. I felt a special kind of closeness though with Nancy's story, given that my Mother worked for 30 years at St. Francis. She spent most of her time at the School of Nursing and so was very proud to have been associated with so many in the caring profession. She actually sort of managed the School of Nursing Alumnae Association, along with the Marywood High School Alumni Association and took great pleasure with keeping track of graduates from classes back to the '30's and planning annual banquets as well. The point is that enjoying the company of classmates and having regular gatherings is a grat thing, and I look forward to catching up with peiople I know and those I don't know well enough yet.

Very sorry to hear about Nancy's passing.  She was a kind and generous person

who will be missed by those who knew her; probably many people in our 1970 class

of 1200 souls.

Nancy was one of those people you met in high school for the first time with whom you connected and hung out with in the Senior Lounge. She seemed to have a perpetual smile and a great laugh. She was part our West Hall/Boltwood group (Polly, Joe, Jenny and others) whose memory lingers with me to this day. The older we get the more friends pass on. A sobering experience for those of us still here. Nancy and my other friends (Tony, Kit, Art, ...) are missed and I hope to see them again someday.
